CHICO — In late November, several business organizations got together to acknowledge local job-producing businesses.
Among the 50 named during the 2011 Innovation Scorecard was a “new” old company, NuvoLase.
NuvoLase bought the rights to PinPoint FootLaser, a product developed locally by longtime local businessman John Strisower for treating toenail fungus, which apparently is a huge problem.
President and CEO Steven P. Duddy accepted the innovation award and was introduced to the business community at that event.
As Duddy tells it, Strisower was looking for laser information, and Duddy had been involved in the medical laser industry for several decades.
Duddy said he saw the opportunity and promise of what Strisower had built, and with Strisower’s blessing, NuvoLase acquired the rights and assets to the laser.
In turn, a Massachusetts company called Cynosure, another light and laser-based player, purchased the rights to distribute the laser from NuvoLase.
NuvoLase is still a Chico company. Duddy moved it from a 1,500-square-foot office at the airport to one twice that size on Ilahee Lane, off East Avenue.
The company has eight employees, according to Duddy, whose office is in San Mateo but he comes to Chico every other week.
There are no plans to uproot the Chico presence, Duddy said, complimenting the “team.”
“That was one of the biggest things that attracted me. they are very hard-working, very dedicated people.”
Of the laser industry, Duddy said the market offers tremendous opportunity, and confirms interest in the laser treatment from national sports franchises and the military, without naming names.
Cynosure will be selling the laser, offering a turnkey solution to physicians, as well as showing physicians how to market their treatments and educate their patients.
Duddy said his sights are set on improving the product, improving revenue and outsmarting the competition.
In November, NuvoLase was among 50 north valley companies to receive an award for innovation and job creation from Chico Chamber of Commerce, Chico Economic planning Corp., and GROW-California.
