Bangkok Post : Put your feet up

A recent study in the UK reveals that on average, a woman will spend $164,000 (5 million baht) on make-up in her lifetime, and the average woman’s on-the-go cosmetics bag contains more than $200 worth of cosmetics. Another study says an average woman spends almost $54,000 on shoes in her lifetime. Isn’t it funny how the feet work harder than the face, yet get less attention?

Peppermint Smoothing Pumice Foot Scrub is good for the weekly scrub that your tired feet deserve.

To beautify the face, women spend a lot of money on facial creams and make-up. To beautify the feet, women usually buy beautiful shoes rather than pampering the feet the right way. when your feet don’t get the attention they need, there can actually be more serious problems, ones that the most beautiful shoes in the world can’t cure.

In fact, “beautiful” shoes are in most cases the root of the problem, since most women feel that high heels are more beautiful than flats. Angsumalee Raekasin, a physical therapist at Kluaynamthai Hospital, says that on average, we take 3,000 to 5,000 steps a day. Wearing high heels puts more pressure on the bones at the feet and toes, as the weight will be on the toes and metatarsal joints (the bones that extend across the middle of the foot and connect to the toes) rather than the soles. This will cause the calves to work harder in order to maintain balance. Heels should be no more than 11/2 inches (3.8cm) high for healthy feet and legs.

She also warns that during the rainy season, high heels are even more dangerous. It is hard enough to walk on slippery floor, but with unstable heels, the chance of tripping and slipping increases. Water can also get trapped in closed-toe shoes, making it even harder to walk, as well as causing foot odour or even nail fungus.

Apart from the daily cleaning regime, you should spend extra time looking after your feet. you can use foot scrub on a weekly basis, or treat yourself to a warm foot soak after a long day’s walk. There are many home remedies for pampering your feet and getting rid of the nasty smell. Soak your feet for 10 minutes in a warm foot bath made with 1 cup of milk and 5 cups of warm water. you can also put tea, salt, vinegar or sodium bicarbonate in your foot bath. Make sure you dry your feet completely afterward, as any lingering moisture can make bacteria grow faster.

Foot soak, however, can leave the skin of your feet feeling dry. Pamper the foot skin as you would your face. Dry, flaky skin at the feet can be prone to infection, causing many other health problems later on. To keep the skin healthy and moisturised, use foot cream or foot lotion daily. For extra dry feet, apply baby oil on your feet and massage for 5 minutes. put on a pair of socks to avoid leaving a mess on the floor, and go to sleep with the socks on or leave them on for at least 4 hours. you will have baby-soft feet when you wake up.

Other than unhealthy shoes, another worst enemy of your feet is bad nail polish, which will make your toe nails yellow and bristle. either invest in quality nail polishes or go to trustworthy nail salons to get professional treatments, otherwise just let them be. Keeping your toe nails short and clean can help reduce the smell.

Anti-bacterial hand gels, especially scented ones, can kill germs on your feet and decrease bacterial growth, the major causes of foot odour. Bath & Body Works hand gel is now available at leading supermarkets in Thailand.
